Field Note

Quiet roadside station in the mountains of Nagano, featuring a local market, restaurant, and basic restroom facilities. It works well as an uncomplicated overnight stop on the way to the Snow Monkey Park or further into the alpine region. It is pleasantly peaceful in the morning, with surrounding mountain peaks providing a scenic backdrop despite its practical location.

Field Note

A modern rest area (Michi-no-Eki) with Koinobori carp streamers fluttering above the parking area and exceptionally clean restrooms. The 42 °C hot foot bath offers great relaxation after a long drive. Important for planning: the market and foot bath close early at 5:00 PM.

Field Note

Simple, quiet parking area at the gateway to Senjōgahara and Nikko National Park. Not a classic Michi-no-Eki, but well-equipped for an overnight stay with public restrooms, a restaurant, and a small shop nearby.

Daytime parking only, no overnight stays!
We originally hoped to stay overnight at this idyllic parking spot with a small restroom facility – the Jizo statues along the gorge are just a few minutes' walk away. However, due to the recent camper boom and to protect the peaceful residential area, a strict ban on overnight sleeping in vehicles is now enforced. We relocated to a nearby Michi-no-Eki instead.

Field Note

A large, lively Michi-no-Eki on the outskirts of Utsunomiya that goes far beyond a simple rest stop. In addition to a regional market selling local produce and specialties, it features several food options, an Onsen thermal bath, and its own microbrewery. Live music was playing on the small stage during our visit – a fantastic place for an extended break, a good meal, or a relaxing afternoon on the road.

Field Note

Parking right in front of the restroom facility. Located directly behind it is a restaurant and the real surprise of this location: the mystical red Torii gate path leading to the Inari shrine at Hana-no-iwaya. Late afternoon and dusk create a very special atmosphere here between the cliff face, shrine grounds, and vibrant red Torii gates.
