Essential for practical application: Japanese city hotels usually do not have their own parking spaces, and stealth camping in the metropolises is neither advisable nor relaxed. The solution lies in logistics: In Tokyo, we parked the camper at an affordable parking lot on the outskirts (approx. 45 mins by metro); in Kyoto, at a central parking lot ~600 m from the hotel; and in Hiroshima, comfortably at the harbor with excellent train connections (35 mins to the center). Although this incurs moderate parking fees, it is what makes full comfort in the cities possible in the first place and still keeps the overall travel budget well below a pure train journey.
Note on the household budget: Regular supermarket purchases and cooking in the camper were treated as everyday living expenses, just like at home, and are excluded from this budget.

Over 40 free camper nights in the countryside offset the rental costs. In the cities, we chose business hotels (APA, Travelodge) – opting for planned external parking instead of "stealth camping" (Tokyo: 45 mins by metro, Kyoto: 600m walk, Hiroshima: harbor with approx. 35 mins by train). Despite this, the average cost was only around €80.00 p.p./day (compared to €110–160 for pure train/hotel trips).
